What's Emotional Infidelity?

We all have friends outside a committed relationship, but when that friendship turns into more than just what it is, a red flag should go up. What I'm referring to is emotional infidelity.

Emotional infidelity occurs when you're in a committed relationship, but find you're forming an emotional attachment with another person outside the current relationship. Although this may appear harmless, it can eventually lead to physical infidelity.

If you find yourself forming an emotional attachment to someone that you can't tell your partner about, you need to seriously consider why this is happening. Shutting your partner out of your life comes with potential problems. I'm not saying you need to tell your partner everything about your day, but deliberately hiding a friendship with another person is not being honest.

In this case, you should seriously ask yourself why you’re forming an emotional connection with the third person. Maybe your relationship is lacking an important element that the third person is able to provide. Sure, it’s always nice to have someone you can talk to openly about what’s going on with your life. However, if you’re telling the third party about your relationship problems, that you’re not even discussing with your partner, you are basically becoming emotionally involved.

Think about how your partner will feel if they were to find out about your emotional infidelity. You can even turn the situation around and ask yourself, “How would I feel if my partner was emotionally involved with someone else?”

Although emotional infidelity may sound harmless, it can quickly turn into something serious that will definitely be disastrous to your relationship. Your partner is going to pick up on the fact that you’re becoming more and more distant. You bet they will eventually ask you what’s going on. Instead of pretending that nothing is wrong, reevaluate your situation and put a stop to it before it’s too late.
